EXCERPT:
I
pushed to my feet and was momentarily surprised by how close the movement put
us. I was eye-level with the base of his throat, and watched in fascination as
his Adam's apple bobbed up and down. I lifted a hand and put it on the center
of his chest to balance myself. I felt his heart thud erratically under my
palm.
"I
want to tell you something, Campbell."
He
caught my hand and moved to step back. I didn't let him put any distance
between us. I lifted my free hand and wrapped it around the back of his neck. I
needed to stand on my tippy-toes to be at eye level with him. His dark gaze was
full of conflict and confusion.
"Whatever
you have to do to keep your sister safe is fine with me. No matter how extreme
or drastic your actions are, if you think they're justified, that's all that
matters to me. What I know is that who you were in the past and who you are now
deserve better than you've been given. My support probably doesn't mean
anything to you, but I want you to know that you have it, nonetheless. It's the
least I can offer after you came up a mountain in a blizzard to save me."
I
couldn't explain the gnawing need to be close to him. I didn't understand the
pull he had on me. There were no words to describe how alluring I found his
warmth and how badly I wanted to bring some light into his dark eyes.
Trying
to get under his skin may have started as a game, but at the moment when all I
could see, smell, hear, and feel was him. Now it felt much more serious than
some innocent teasing to get his attention.
Did
I plan to kiss Campbell? No.
Did
I have any right to kiss Campbell? Also no.
Did
I think he would welcome the press of my lips against his? Fuck no.
But
none of that stopped me.
We
were already so close, and I breathed in with every breath he exhaled. Like we
were giving each other life. My circumstances were a mess of my own making at
the moment, but that didn't stop me from wanting to drag him into the turbulent
current of my emotions, and the rushing flood.
